From 1971 to 1990, the Telangana movement entered a mobilization phase with growing political activism, but statehood aspirations faced setbacks. After the 1969 agitation, the Telangana Praja Samithi (TPS), which advocated for a separate state, merged with the Congress in 1971, diluting the movement. Despite this, resentment over economic disparities and the failure to fulfill promises made during the merger persisted. Political disillusionment deepened as Telangana continued to experience underdevelopment compared to coastal Andhra. Throughout the 1980s, student groups, intellectuals, and activists kept the demand alive through protests and public mobilization, although statehood remained politically sidelined. The movement lacked cohesive leadership and was overshadowed by national and state-level politics. However, the cultural and socio-economic grievances of Telangana were simmering, setting the stage for renewed calls for statehood in the 1990s and 2000s.
